Getting Here

More Than Camp

In addition to summer camp, we also offer youth retreat weekends throughout the school year for campers in grades 4-12th grade. Our camp director assists with these retreats, but each has its own "lay director" — a non-clergy person who oversees the weekend — and youth leaders who plan the event. These retreats take place at camp, and many of our campers, camp leaders, and camp traditions crossover into the retreats. Like camp, these retreats aren't long enough to delve deep into denominations, so they instead focus on participants' individual relationships with God.

These retreats offer two opportunities: the opportunity to participate and the opportunity to serve. The people who take the opportunity to serve are called team members, and different retreats have different qualifications for team.

We do have some scholarships available for all of our Diocesan youth programs. For more information, contact Allison Vining.

Breakout (Participants: Grades 4-6; Team: Grades 8-12)

BREAKOUT! is a fun, action-packed, 24-hour retreat for 4th, 5th & 6th graders of the Episcopal Diocese of Florida and their friends. This weekend will encourage participants in their walk with Jesus Christ and see how they can break the chains of the world that can make adolescence so difficult.

Breakout takes place in March each year. In 2019, Breakout is March 9-10. The registration fee is $70.

To serve on team, youth must be in grades 8-12. Previously attending Breakout or any other youth event is not a requirement. We also need adults to serve as cabin moms and dads.

For questions or more information, please contact Breakout Coordinator, Kristen Bryant.

New Beginnings (Participants: Grades 6-8; Team: Grades 9-12)

New Beginnings is designed especially to respond to the unique challenges and concerns of youth in grades 6-8. It was created by adults and young people to help participants grow in their love of themselves, others and our Lord Jesus Christ. During the weekend, participants meet peers from across the diocese, enjoy skits, listen to talks, and participate in small group activities and discussions. These activities focus on self, friends, parents, siblings, school, God's love, prayer and the church. Free time is built in for youth to have an opportunity to fellowship with their newfound friends. Participants of New Beginnings may attend as many weekends as they choose throughout their middle school years.

New Beginnings takes place in November each year. The registration fee is $140.

Team members must be in grades 9-12. Previously attending New beginnings or any other youth event is not a requirement. Each New Beginnings weekend is headed up by a high school student, the Junior Weekend Advisor. Applications for Junior Weekend Advisor go out in the summer, and the JWA is selected in August. To be eligible, applicants must have served on at least one New Beginnings team. Seniors are preferred. We also need cabin moms and dads!

For questions or more information, contact lay directors Angela Boyd  or Allison Vining.

Happening (Participants: Grades 9-12; Team: Grades 10-12)

Happening is a renewal weekend for high school aged young people in grades 10 - 12.  The Spring Happening weekend in April is the only weekend that allows 9th graders to attend.  The purpose of Happening in the Diocese of Florida is to renew the spiritual life of high school students.  It is a weekend experience of fun, games, sharing, surprises, and most of all, a time of spiritual renewal and empowerment.

Happening takes place in September, January, and April each year. The registration fee is $140.

Team members must have previously attended Happening. Each Happening is led by a youth rector. Rector candidates must have served on at least three Happening teams. We also need cabin moms and dads!

For questions or more information, contact lay director Tiffany LaMotte.
