College of Preachers Conference
The Bishop's Institute for Ministry and Leadership
Dates:Monday, May 08, 2017 - Thursday, May 11, 2017
Location:Young Conference Room
- 2:00pm Thursday
Not only does the craft of preaching take practice, but it takes seasoned instruction, excellent examples, and feedback that is both honest and informed. Clergy in the Diocese of Florida have the opportunity to receive all three at the first College for Preachers.
The conference can accommodate a maximum of 16 participants. Sign up soon before it is too late.
Mentors: The conference will be led by four mentors: The Very Rev. Dr. William Stafford (sometime Dean of The School of Theology, Sewanee); Dr Mark Gignilliat, Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School, Birmingham, Alabama and The Very Rev. Frank Limehouse, former Dean of the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, Alabama.
Preaching is a difficult task, and yet it is usually the primary way in which clergy teach their congregation the Word of God. Honest and informed feedback is hard to come by for clergy who want to hone their skills in order to more effectively preach the Gospel and grow their parish.
The ideal candidate for the College for Preachers is an ordained presbyter and regular pulpit preacher in the Diocese of Florida who wants to take their own preaching to the next level.
Participants at the College for Preachers will have the opportunity to learn from 6 plenary sessions and 4 chapel sermons, each delivered by our esteemed mentors. Each participant will also deliver 2 sermons to a small group of peers, for review facilitated by a mentor. These should be sermons previously delivered in a Sunday Service, in which the preacher thought was good but couldn’t get a clear read on the congregation’s response. Participants should expect to give and receive honest, constructive feedback about every aspect of each sermon, including effectiveness of illustrations, clarity, mannerisms, tone, etc.
Some scholarships are available. The cost of $400 covers room and board for 3 nights at the Episcopal Center and the costs of the Conference and bringing our four excellent mentors together at the Center for the full schedule of mentoring and teaching they will each provide.
The College for Preachers is the inspiration of The Rev. Joe Gibbes, Rector of Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, Jacksonville working in collaboration with The Rev. Cn. Dr. Douglas Dupree at the Bishop’s Institute and Bishop Howard. Either Fr Gibbes or Dr Dupree is happy to be contacted by clergy thinking of signing up: email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org
